Call
to Action for the People of Okinawa - April 27, 2007
ACTION
ALERT
CALL TO ACTION FOR THE PEOPLE OF OKINAWA
Friday, April 27 at 11:30am
Come to a demo in front of the Japanese Consulate to call for the end
of US miiltary base expansion in Henoko, Okinawa. The Japanese government
has begun preliminary surveys of the site. We have just gotten word
that the people of Henoko have started to use civil disobedience to
block these preliminary survey attempts in the ocean. On April 28, citizens
will form a human chain around Camp Schwab as a resolve of humanity
over militarism.
RALLY FOR
JUSTICE IN FRONT OF THE JAPANESE CONSULATE GENERAL
1742 Nu'uanu Avenue (Nu`uanu & Kuakini) Honolulu, Hawaii
(across from 7-11)
Friday, April 27 at 11:30am (rally approx 1 hour)
Parking is tight. Some parking may be available at Liliuokalani Park,
Kuakini street side. Please meet at the corner Nuuanu & Kuakini,
in front of the playground across from 7-11.
Background
For a decade, the vast majority of Okinawans have opposed the US military
& Japanese government realignment plan to construct a large new
military base complex at Camp Schwab in North Okinawa. The complex would
include a "V" shaped runway of 1,800 meters, partly on land
reclaimed from Oura Bay and partly on reef, plus a pier and storage
facilities. The new complex would entail land-fills built on pristine
reef and fishing grounds, an important source of food & income for
Henoko residents, & treasure for future generations.
Despite efforts
to blackmail Okinawa economically, luring with military-related jobs,
many continue to defend the bay. The protest continues. We call on you
to join us, in solidarity with Okinawan people , to stop US military
base construction at Cape Henoko.
We demand that the Government of Japan stop all US military
base expansion in Okinawa !
This action is also an action of solidarity with the people of Hawaii,
Guam, the Philippines, South Korea and many others who are also struggling
against the destructive impacts of US military base expansion. The Chamorro
of Guam in particular face huge impacts with US / Japan plans to relocate
8,000 Marines from Okinawa to Guam. This is not just about Okinawa,
but all localities struggling for peace, justice & self-determination.
We demand
no transfer of Marines to Guam at Japanese taxpayer expense !
Please come out this Friday at 11:30 am and show your support.
However, if you
can't come, please take a few minutes to contact the following:
1. In Hawai`i, write the Japan Consulate in Honolulu as the official
